Crawl space help in Tarboro

Crawl space service for Edgecombe County's seat, in a bend of the Tar River about 16 miles east of Rocky Mount.

Tarboro was chartered in 1760 and has been the Edgecombe County seat since 1764. It had 10,721 residents at the 2020 census. The Tar River wraps around about half of the town, with Princeville directly across the water.

A historic district full of crawl spaces

The Tarboro Historic District covers 45 blocks and more than 300 contributing buildings, anchored by a 15-acre Town Common. Houses that old were built up off the ground on brick piers and foundation walls. Over a century or more, a house like that can pick up added ductwork, rerouted plumbing, infill between piers and moisture problems along the way.

River flooding

Floyd hit Tarboro hard. The USGS measured the Tar River at Tarboro at 41.51 feet on September 19, 1999, almost 10 feet above the 1940 record, with a peak flow nearly double anything seen in over a century. Much of downtown went under several feet of water. Houses that flooded then, or in later storms, may still have water-stained framing, rusted fasteners and insulation that was never replaced.

Sandy terraces, too

Not every Tarboro lot is wet. The Tarboro soil series, named for its type location just west of town, is a sandy terrace soil that drains fast. On those lots, crawl space moisture tends to come more from humid summer air than from the ground.

Permits

The Town of Tarboro's Planning and Inspection department handles permits in town. Edgecombe County's office covers rural areas and towns such as Princeville and Pinetops.
