Rocky Mount had 54,341 residents at the 2020 census. The city takes its name from a rocky mound at the falls of the Tar River, where a post office opened in 1816 and Rocky Mount Mills, the state's second cotton mill, started up in 1818. The railroad arrived in 1839 and the Nash-Edgecombe county line was set along the tracks in 1871.

Hurricane Floyd brought close to 17 inches of rain to the city, and the Tar River at the Rocky Mount gauge peaked at 31.66 feet on September 17, 1999, according to the USGS.
